Treatment of Nervous Patients

Dental anxiety is quite common when patients visit the dentist, it usually occurs due to previous bad experiences during childhood, then having a huge impact on how the patient feels about future visits.

Here at the Park Dental Clinic Dr. Malhi offers intravenous sedation for patients who are fearful of dental treatments.

Dr. Malhi has performed intravenous sedation on many patients since gaining his diploma in sedation in 2003.

There are two main ways of reducing anxiety with sedation, these are relative sedation which is gas and air or intravenous sedation. Relative sedation involves the patient breathing gas and air which promotes hypnotic suggestion. Intravenous sedation involves injecting the drug into a vein. Around 90-95% of our patients opt to be treated by intravenous sedation, as it is a very safe technique and is excellent at relieving anxiety during dental treatment.

The main indications for a patient choosing sedation are those who are having a surgical procedure carried out, such as implants.  Patients also decide to have sedation solely through anxiety.

The drug which is used by the dentist to carry out the sedation, is called Midazolam, it is usually placed into the hand of the patient and causes the patient to be in a state of conscious sedation, the drug also has an amnesic effect so most patients do not remember the dental treatment they have received. With intravenous sedation a responsible adult must be brought to accompany the patient on the day of the treatment, and must be responsible for them for the remainder of the day. This is because the drug stays in the patient’s body for up to 8 hours and although the patient may feel normal there judgment may be impaired.
